I'm Running for Congress!

November 2, 2013 by April June Freeman (Register to contact)

Hello Stevenson High School Students & Facility.

I'm April Freeman. You might remember me as April Kostrach, or Don Kostrach's younger sister. Maybe even Dawn Kostrach's older sister.

I've been extremely politically involved for nearly 20 years. I'm
the wife of a Union Worker, the mother of two adult daughters and we have been a Union family for nearly 30 years. I’m a Business Owner, an Activist, a Community Organizer, a Writer, The Vice President of the Democratic Club of Cape Coral, a Board Member of the Fort Myers and Naples Chapter of NOW (National Organization for Women), and a Precinct Committeewoman in Lee County. My experiences through life, career and political affiliations gives me broad insight to the office I’m seeking.

I have completed the Political Opportunity Program Training offered by EMILY’S List and I’m a Class of 2013 Graduate of The Women’s Campaign School at Yale, which is affixed inside Yale Law School in New Haven, Connecticut. Each year women applicants are chosen for the Yale program from around globe through a stringent screening process, on the basis of background and their ability to be great leaders.

I have broken gender barriers in the film and television industry and have the ability to exceed set goals and achieve beyond expectations as shown throughout my life and in my career. More so, as shown in Southwest Florida while working on the 2012 Presidential election as a Fellow for President Obama and as a Get Out The Vote Director in the Fort Myers / Cape Coral area. During that time, I was involved and educated in all levels of elected office in Southwest Florida that have an immediate impact in our community. I was able to gain a real understanding of the constituency and how our current elected officials are less than effective in resolving the issues plaguing this community. I’m determined to make a difference for Southwest Florida and our Country, that’s why I’m running for Congress.

Since announcing my candidacy, I’ve made continuing strides towards my goal of serving our community in an elected capacity. Official Endorsements have been received including a National Endorsement from DAPAC (Democrats Advancing Progressive Action in Congress) which is a Pro-Union, Pro-Choice, Pro-LGBT, Progressive Political Action Committee who currently have only Endorsed Representative Alan Grayson and myself in the State of Florida.

This past year of campaigning has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. With only 12 month before my election and with no primary in sight, I'm sure my race is going to heat up and get more exciting here very quickly. I hope you'll all find me on facebook and follow along or on web at

Best,
April
